One third of a century ago today, Rory Gallagher performed ‘Calling Card’, at his regular annual gig at City Hall, in his home town, Cork city, Ireland. Throughout the seventies, the annual Rory Gallagher City Hall gig was ‘bigger than football’, with young people throughout Cork, going along every year ‘religiously’, to see local hero Rory perform to his fans. Hopefully, this previously unheard audio track illustrates the enthusiasm, hysteria, electricity and two-way communication that went on between Rory and his home town fans. In the absence of video, images and text shown here are (humbly) ‘borrowed’ from the absolute best musicians magazine of the seventies and eighties, International Musician and Recording World (IMRW). IMRW featured Rory regularly, and grew, from its initial launch in the UK, to serve USA for some years before its sad demise. Make sure to search out and buy issues of these magazines, if you can find them anywhere, as the wonderful interviews are reliable records of the thoughts of music artists of the day, not to mention the gear then used by musicians. Hopefully, some day, these great interviews will be reprinted and made available to the modern masses. Rory Gallagher live, Saturday January 1st, 1977. Uploaded New Year’s morning, January 1st, 2010. Were you at any of Rory’s Cork gigs? If yes, please do leave your memories here by commenting! All other positive comments welcomed.
